PERFORMANCE CRITERIA

1. Undertake a health and safety site review

1.1 Identify and communicate potential hazards and risks.

1.2 Report hazards and risks in accordance with policies and procedures.

1.3 Select, use maintain and store personal protective equipment in accordance with both occupational health and safety and material safety data sheet requirements.

2. Prepare Tier 1 equipment for use

2.1 Use the incident action plan (IAP) and/or the site-specific deployment plan to identify and select oil spill response equipment according to supervisor’s instructions.

2.2 Use manufacturer’s specifications and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in the management of routine pre-operational checks of equipment while working as part of a team.

2.3 Report unsafe or faulty equipment in accordance with workplace procedures and set aside for repair or replacement.

3. Operate and/or deploy Tier 1 equipment

3.1 Operate and maintain equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, SOPs and supervisor’s instructions while working in a team.

3.2 Complete work tasks in accordance with health and safety requirements and the IAP.

3.3 Identify, action and monitor environmental implications associated with the operation and maintenance of equipment.

3.4 Monitor environmental conditions in conjunction with operational activities.

4. Check, clean and store Tier 1 equipment

4.1 Report equipment use in accordance with IAPs/SOPs and/or the incident management system

4.2 Clean, secure and store equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, maintenance manuals, supervisor’s instructions and/or SOPs.

4.3 Report equipment malfunctions, faults, wear or damage to supervisors for actioning.

4.4 Maintain and clean workplaces in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

Assessment must confirm the ability to:

Work effectively in a team to safely deploy and monitor basic (Tier 1) equipment for the containment, recovery and storage of oil.

Context of and specific resources for assessment

Competency should be assessed in a simulated response environment or operational situation.

Method of assessment

Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.

Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an approved simulated environment.

third party reports from supervisors

written or oral questions

case studies
